1. Swimming at Saugatuck Dunes State Park

A sprawling nature reserve covering an area of over 1,000 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck Dunes State Park is the perfect destination to spend an entire day swimming and relaxing by the beach in a hot summer day. Established in 1977 and located just over 55 miles southwest of downtown Lowell, this nature reserve can be reached in about one hour by car, driving along route I-196.

Although it is open to the public throughout the year, Saugatuck Dunes State Park is mostly visited during the summer months, when day trippers from all over the state come here to spend some time away from the city and take a break from the routine. Besides swimming, this place is an excellent spot for hiking and picnicking.

2. Camping at Yankee Springs Recreation Area

If you want to truly disconnect from the urban life and spend a weekend in a quaint nature reserve, Yankee Springs Recreation Area is a spot you should definitely check out. Spanning over 5,200 acres, this place features more than 300 camping sites and several cabins where you can spend the night after exploring the surrounding areas.

Located a little under 30 miles south of downtown Lowell, Yankee Springs Recreation Area can be reached in about 40 minutes by car via Alden Nash Avenue. Some of the main spots you should not miss while exploring this nature reserve including the Devil’s Superbowl kettle formation and the Graves Hill scenic overlook. Other popular activities here include hiking, fishing, boating, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

3. Fishing at Manistee National Forest

Located about 50 miles north of Lowell, Manistee National Forest was established in the late 1930s and is a true paradise for anglers and water sports enthusiasts from all over the region. Spanning an area of over half a million acres, this place is a popular spot for lake, river, pond, and stream fishing. Some of the species you can find here include wild brook trout, brown trout, and steelhead.
